RPL: Recognition of Prior Learning

What is RPL?

RPL is the process for gaining recognition of skills and knowledge you have already developed through:

Qualifications from other Registered Training Organisations (RTO) such as schools, TAFEs, Universities, Adult & Community Centres are considered. Where they confirm achievement of Frontline Management competencies, they are recognised.

What if my learning comes from short courses at work?

Workplace training programs are also considered even if no nationally recognised qualification was provided. Where you can provide evidence that confirms achievement of Frontline Management competencies in these course, they will be recognised.

What if my knowledge and skill were developed overseas?

We take previous experience and study into account whether you undertook this in Australia or abroad. You may also want to talk with the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) - they can provide you with further information on recognition processes and requirements for particular professions.

How is prior learning assessed?

Prior learning is assessed by reviewing evidence you provide that demonstrates achievement of learning outcomes matching unit competencies.

What are the steps in RPL?

1. Complete an RPL application form and send it in for evaluation.

2. Meet or talk with your assessor - she or he will advise you on how to proceed and provide you with an RPL Kit.

3. Gather the evidence, using the Kit to guide you - and stay in touch with your assessor who may be able to help you problem solve difficulties as they arise.

4. When you are ready, return the Kit complete with relevant evidence and supporting documentation.

What if I can't provide enough evidence to support my application?

Where evidence is hard to gather or where you don't have sufficient evidence to enable the assessor to support recognition, you can still proceed viawill discuss the options of practical demonstration and/or assessment. While it is your responsibility to provide, collate and verify evidence to the satisfaction of the assessor, we will assist you where we can.

What standards will I be assessed against?

All candidates are judged against established standards or benchmarks. These standards have been developed by industry and are called competency standards. Competency standards may also be referred to as units of competency.

SkillsCentral will appoint an assessor. Assessors must have demonstrated their own competence in the particular competency being assessed and in the following three units of competency from the Training Package in Assessment and Workplace Training:

The fees will depend on the level of assessment required.

How long will it take?

The skills recognition process will be completed and results finalised within 21 days of the assessor receiving sufficient authentic, valid, reliable and recent evidence.
